Radiofrequency ablation is a nonsurgical, minimally invasive procedure that uses controlled heat from radio waves to create a wound on one or more nerves. The wound blocks pain signals traveling through the nerves to the brain. Some conditions that radiofrequency ablation can treat include neck, back, shoulder, hip, and knee pain to name a few.
Fluoroscopic imaging is used to view the needle and joint/spine structures to ensure the exact nerve is treated. A thin needle is guided to the nerve(s), then radiofrequency waves are passed through the needle to the targeted nerve(s). The procedure is typically completed in under 30 minutes and you are able to walk out of the clinic right after the procedure and go back to work within 24 to 72 hours. The effects of the procedure could last for as long as 6 months to more than two years, depending on how quickly the nerve heals.
